The Value of Volunteers

Since I was in high school, I have regularly volunteered for a variety of community organizations. I come by it honestly–I remember both of my parents being involved in volunteer organizations growing up: my dad reading at the local elementary school and my mom being a board member for several local organizations. From working at a summer camp for impoverished girls in my hometown to helping coordinate my neighborhood festival to being a weekly volunteer at the Atlanta Tool Bank, giving back has always been a part of my life. It brings me joy to help others and feel like I am supporting my community. I like being a part of something bigger than myself.

Volunteering makes everyone happy!
Volunteering makes everyone happy!

Therapist Resource Network is a completely volunteer run organization. We rely on those who are willing to give their time, energy, and expertise to do the work of supporting therapists. This means our progress is often slower than what we may prefer, and we may be growing at a slower pace than what we would hope. It also means that we have to focus our energy on our strengths and what we believe will help TRN to grow and that some things just don’t get done (I’m looking at you social media).

And on the flip side, what do our volunteers gain from spending their most valuable resources on TRN? We hope that they feel appreciated and know that their work is important to helping us grow and support more therapists. Because none of the work we do currently is specific to a time or place, our volunteers can give back at any time and place that is convenient to them. Lastly (and arguably most importantly), our volunteers might receive cookies in the mail, since that’s my favorite way to work through some stress and have a creative outlet.

Whether you can donate an hour a month or three hours per week, we are always looking for passionate volunteers to help us support therapists. One of the easiest ways to get involved is to help us spread the word about TRN through channels you may already be a part of: Facebook groups, therapist groups or listservs, on your personal or professional social media channels or with your professional network. We can guide you with some easy language and social media posts if you are willing to help in this way. Or if you're looking for a way to provide ongoing support, our biggest areas of need are Social Media/Communications/PR, Accounting, and Website Design & Maintenance. If your skills and talents lie in other areas, we are open to finding ways to utilize those. Schedule a meeting with us so we can find the best fit for you to volunteer with Therapist Resource Network!
